| My father served in Company K during WWII. I couldn't find the name of his platoon. He was trained on the flamethrower which he used when he jumped into a cave and destroyed a Japanese machine gun nest. He won the Silver Star as a result. He was a born and raised in Long Island City, New York in April of 1910 and he died in a nursing home in Manhattan on July 3, 1995. He often told us "war stories" growing up, mostly about being transported on ships from one island to another and some of the colorful characters who were in his "outfit." He trained on the island of Kauai and also in the California desert. I've attached a photo of what my father described as "the survivors" of his group. I don't know if these men were the survivors of his platoon or of Company K. Photo - My Dad, Christopher J. Dorsey, PFC is middle row, second from left (wth curley hair). Photo: Susan Dorsey. |
