The MPs were policemen, of course, and their job was to enforce the law, civilian and military. In combat the MPs' major duty was to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Often that meant going into action right after the riflemen so they could direct support troops to the proper areas. It took skilled traffic control and the MPs had the expertise. MPs also handled POWs and  displaced persons.
