First_combat:

First combat was on New Guinea.

Vivid combat memory:

While camping for the night on New Guinea, the Japanese bombarded us with mortar shells.  Some of my buddies were killed. The shells landed next to me, killing my buddies, but did not injure me.  I was not in s foxhole, but my friends were, yet I was the one who was not hurt.

Funniest:

While stationed on Hawaii, I was serving in the communications unit.  One of the soldiers would always come back drunk at night, so one night we put a pale of water balanced on the top of the entrance door, so that when he opened the door, he would get drenched.  But before he returned for the evening, the officer of the day was making his rounds, and opened the door and the bucket fell on him, drenching him.  A slew of obscenities spewed from his mouth, and we all had a good laugh.

Worst:

The worst moment was the night my buddy was killed by Japanese mortor fire.

Final:

After the war was over, and we were to be stationed in Japan, the first day we landed, all the Japanese mothers would grab their children and run indoors, as they had been told that the American soldiers would eat little babies.  Within three days, all the American GIs had a young Japanese girl on their arms!
