123rd FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION

Campaign Streamers: War with Spain - Puerto Rico; World War 1 - St. Mihiel, Muese-Argonne, Lorraine 1918; World War II - New Guinea, Luzon.

Each artillery battalion had three batteries. In the Artillery battalions, a battery consisted of four guns. One gun in a battery was designated the "base piece". It would fire the first shot in an engagement and the adjacent three would adjust their aim from readings of the base cannon.

123rd Field Artillery Regiment traces its lineage to the 6th Infantry Regiment which was constituted on 4 May 1882 in the Illinois National Guard and organized by re-designation of existing companies, which were organized in 1872-1878 in northwestern Illinois (Rock Island, Moline, Monmouth, Galesburg, etc). The unit was mustered into Federal service on 11 May 1898 as 6th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry and mustered out of Federal service on 25 November 1898 at Springfield, IL, and reorganized in 1903 in the Illinois National Guard as 6th Infantry.
